Matching an herb to an ailment? Here's a better way to go.



Just a comment about using a certain herb for a certain ailment. I know that's how 90% of people using herbs look at it: that you match an herb to an ailment. So if that's right, how come when one person takes an herb for a certain problem its fixes it? Then another person decides, hey, that worked for them, I have the same ailment, I'll take that herb. For them, it doesn't work. So now the person either decides that herbs don't work, or that herb herbs doesn't work.

What is missing here is the 3rd element in herbalism, which is the main focus of my herbal course. You have to take into account a person's energetics or constitution.

Lets say a person takes Cottonwood tincture & it relieves their aches & pains. Cottonwood is suited to those who have tense muscles & nerves, dry crackly joints, and who are 'cold' constitutionally. So for those people it will help relieve their pain.

For people who are overheated & have a lot of moisture in their bodies, it is not the herb of choice.

The other aspect I address in my herb course is the ROOT CAUSE. In the above example of pain again. Its fine to take an herb to relieve your pain. But WHY do you have pain in the first place? Is it acidity in the body from poor food choices? If so, taking an herb to relieve the pain is only addressing the symptoms, you need to address the root cause & look at your nutrition.

So, when choosing herbs, (and our food) we need to look at more than just matching an herb & ailment. When you find the right herb, you often just need to use a couple drops of the tincture (so your tinctures last waaaay longer than if you are taking a dropperful several times a day). And when you address the underlying cause such as nutrition you are going to have long last results.

Raw (not too sweet) chocolate cookies



soaked chia & guar gum, mix with water until thick
add: a bit of maple syrup, sesame seeds,dry coconut, sunflower seeds, dark cacoa powder.

Roll in coconut & then dehydrate a few hours.

dip in chocolate: honey, coconut oil & cocoa powder melted.

RAW YAM CHIPS


How to make RAW Yam chips:

I thinly sliced a yam on the mandolin

Placed the pieces on the food dehydrator tray

Sprinkled them with a bit of Herbamare & some nutritional yeast

I let the slices sit for a while, the salt draws out some moisture
which them makes the yeast stick to the yam slices.

Dehyrate all day & keep pulling the tray out & snacking on them!

The trick with the yam chips in humid weather is to eat them right
away. I turn the dehydrator off overnight & they are not crispy any
more, so I turn it back on the next day & eat them right from the tray.

Beginning to eat raw foods & cravings



This is a reponse I wrote to a raw food question asked to me on my forum.  The question was: "I know that gradually your body asked to you start eating raw, and I feel like mine's doing the same thing, but the more I crave eating in a fashion that raises my energetic vibration, the more I feel emotionally drawn to heavy carbs and sugars. Do you have any suggestions for me?"


The cravings throw you all over the place! It is because your body has not woken up to what it truly needs. You can crave sugar (carbs) when you require bitters, or crave carbs when you need a protein such as hemp hearts or avocado.

There's some info on my website about raw. There's tons on the internet, and great books out there. Chapters in town here has some great raw books.

I'd say the main thing is to ADD raw stuff to your existing diet. Let the foods you don't need fall away naturally. Don't deny yourself. In my opinion the worst thing you can do is yo yo between raw foods & conventional diet. That's why I say, to add the raw & let the other stuff naturally fall away.

I am doing a lighter way of eating right now, and when I get into that zone its amazing what happens to your senses. Most of us feel that the bread section in the grocery store smells great. I wonder if that is because most of us have candida & so our bodies crave the carbs, sugar & yeast to feed the candida? I walked past the bread section yesterday & had to cover my nose with my scarf!

So yeah, the cravings go away on their own.

Figure out what to add that is raw. That way you fill yourself up on the nutritious raw foods and you feel satisfied. If you want to eat something else do it, but be aware of how you feel from eating it.
Think of the raw foods you love: what fruits & veggies do you love? Learn how to incorporate nut & make your own carb type foods like the crackers & cookies that are raw. These help too.

Part of it all, is that we are emotionally attached to foods we don’t need, and we are full of toxins. As these begin to let go you will find certain foods no longer hold an interest.

Later on in this adventure you get a craving out of the blue & you can think about it for a few days & figure out what your body is asking for & make a raw version of it. Or just eat that food & see how your body reacts.

I have been on my raw journey for 3 years. First the seafood items dropped away, then the carbs, then other things. After 1 and half years I craved pizza, thought about it for 3 days and decided I wanted some. So..... at 3 big slices loaded with cheese, it was fabulous. However..... the next day the wheat in the crust gave me an anxiety attack that lasted for days. Definitely not worth it. For the next few months if I even thought about eating something with wheat in it, I thought about what eating wheat did to me, and knew it wasn’t worth it at all.

So let your body & emotions guide you. Be conscious & mindful of what you ingest & how you feel.
Add appealing raw foods to your diet.
Cleansing herbs help. Cleanse out toxins.
Reiki attunements help. Also set intentions & use your reiki to manifest healthy eating patterns.
Let the unhealthy foods fall away.

topping= make a 'milk' from hemp heart, sesame seeds, water & a few strawberries to pour over it.

This is filling & tastes fantastic.

Signs of candida overgrowth in the body, part 2


Antifungals should be used for a few weeks, then switch to probiotics for a few weeks, repeat this over a period of 3 months. A good antifungal tincture includes olive leaf, black walnut, and pau d’arco. Oil of Oregano can be used separately. Probiotics can be used as a supplement, get the refrigerated kind at your health food store, and follow the directions on the label.

The best probiotic supplement I have found is BioK. It usually comes in a box of 6 more in the refrigerated section of a health food store. It costs a lot more than bottles of capsules and works waaaaaaaaaaaay better. And no, eating yogurt won’t work.
During my distance learning herbalist course, we make formulas for lowering candida in the body. 

When candida levels are lower you can have:

  • ·        Clearer thinking & better memory

  • ·        You can begin to eliminate:


o   Fungal skin problems
o   Vaginal yeast infections
o   Digestive problems: bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation
o   Emotional problems: anxiety, irritability
o   Problems related to allergies: wheezing, sneezing, sinus problems

I have seen candida cleanses work with many people, although I think it is necessary to have the herbs & probiotics on hand & take them several times a year.

Watching what you eat is the key. Sugar feeds candida, and often as you begin to cut out sugars & the candida starts to die, you get cravings for sugar! As we’ll discuss in the herbalist course bitter herbs can help with this for many reasons.

Depending on how bad your candida levels are, and how quickly you want to clear it up, you can get on a candida diet, which basically involves eating foods that do not feed candida. You can still have some success by just taking the herbs & probiotics.

During the herbalist course we discuss how to discover which herbs are best for your body energy, so in this way you will be using the right herbs for your body.

21 day attunement challenge, DAY 9


Well, I have sat down quite a few times with the intention of writing more about these daily attunements. All I can say is that the process transcends words. I have given/received 3 attunements per day for the last 8 days. It has moved so far beyond what I can describe....

All of us taking part are keeping journal records daily of our experiences.

And the support & daily insights during short discussions before attunements have been wonderful. So nice to have a daily spiritual practice & also daily discussion with reiki friends to help find balance & focus in our lives.

I know this will be a lifelong practice for me to do this practice.

That's all I am going to write for now. Possibly in a few days I will be in a space of finding words to describe this experience, or maybe its just not necessary to write it, maybe its just all about experiencing it.

I know this can actually be quite difficult. But during 8 months of the herbalist course I just teach bits of information to do with taking charge of your own health & as you go along you get really comfortable with changes you want to make & what will suit your constitution.

2. Good nutrition

Good nutrition is needed for the basis of getting over any ill health & for PREVENTION is illness. I teach a lot about prevention of illness in first place and about using good nutrition as a base for getting your body healthy. Although you can still continue with bad eating habits & bad lifestyles & have the herbs work to assisting your body, if you truly want to feel great & have good energy, a clear mind & clean body you need to eat well too.

If you are continually putting poisons (which many people call their food) into your body you will not have good health.

I am 90% raw vegan. I teach not only how to move your diet towards raw & vegan, but also the steps in between, everywhere from letting go of junk food & sugar, meat, to leaning towards being vegetarian, to adding more raw food to your diet. As you begin to take steps towards getting non nutritious foods out of your diet & eating good whole living foods you begin to feel better & begin to crave more nutritious foods.

3. Cleansing the body

I also believe  in cleansing the body. I do NOT recommend store bought cleanses. In accelerating the removal of toxins from the body you can move towards better health. You need to cleanse the body in order to get your body working correctly tone & build your body systems. You need to have cleaner bowels & a healthy liver & a properly working digestive system in order to feel well.

RAW GARLIC BREAD & MAYO




This is SO good. Found a couple recipes online & changed them to suit what I had in the cupboard. I haven't had bread in a few years, but this tastes like bread to me.

BREAD:


  • 1 cup raw sunflower seeds 
  • 1/2 cup flax seeds
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 dates
  • 1/2 tsp. Himalayan salt


Grind this all up in a good processor, I left it a tiny bit coarse.
Then I added some soaked chia seeds, about 1 tbsp. in 1/3 cup water, left it to sit an hour to puff up.

I formed this into a flattened ball with oil on my hands, then rolled it in some sesame seeds & put a little salt on it. Dehydrate for a couple of hours.

I put a raw mayo on top:

In the magic bullet, or something that will grind really fine:

  • 1/2 cup raw cashews, grind really fine, then add:
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tbsp. olive oil
  • 1 tbsp. lemon juice
  • a bit of salt
This mayo is really good!

Herbs for dogs !




As part of the  8 month herbalist course, I incorporate health for pets into the course. When I got my masters degree in herbalism, I did my thesis on herbs, nutrition and supplements for dogs.

I have worked with remedies for my dogs for many years. I learned a lot of this from hands on experience with 2 of my aging dogs back in the late 1990’s.

It is nice to be able to ease their pain with herbs.

I also learned a lot about feeding them. My 2 dogs that I have now eat a raw food diet and have done very well on that. I don’t think it is a good idea to switch a dog of any age over to raw food right away. Just like people, they need a transition time.

Older dogs are probably best just left on the diet they are used to. You can incorporate herbs into their diet to make them more comfortable. I used herbs for helping with pain issues, anxiety, and constipation for my older dogs.

Younger dogs may do well on raw, there’s many ways to go about this, but keep in mind that dogs are like people, they all have different needs with food, supplements & herbs. If you want take my 8 month distance learning herbalist course you can learn much more about this.

CANINE FORMULAS: Below are examples of more formulas just to give an idea of the scope of support that herbs can give. Herbs used are going to depend on matching the energetic needs of the dog to the right herb. I teach how to custom blend forumulas during my herbalist course.

Digestive System Support: chronic constipation, healing to digestive tract, aids digestion, stomach upset, gas . Contains: slippery elm, goldenseal, milk thistle, licorice, wormwood, peppermint, chamomile. May require fiber, probiotics, digestive enyzmes, diet changes


Immune System Support: fleas, hot spots, recurring illness, infections. Contains: garlic, echinacea, goldenseal, cleavers, yellow dock, burdock, red clover. use for 2 - 3 months



Pregnancy & Nursing Support: pregnancy tonic, helps with labor and birth, enriches and increases milk supply. Contains: nettles, oatstraw, raspberry leaf, alfalfa
   
Pain Support: joint pain, injuries, muscular pain, post surgery. Contains: mullein, crampbark, willow bark, ginger, lobelia, licorice, lemon balm. I used this formula for several years with my aging Schnauzer who had terrible arthritis due to injuries, it kept him comfortable & increased his lifespan.
 
Pre-Surgery Support: reduces risk of bleeding, boosts immune system, calming. Contains: echinacea, nettles, rescue remedy, lavender Don't use blood thinners such as willow bark or ginkgo

Senior Dog Support: for aging dogs, calming, heart support, helps brain circulation and memory. Contains hawthorn, motherwort, cayenne, lemon balm, ginkgo
  
Urinary Tract Support: infections, to prevent recurring infections. Contains: dandelion, nettles, echinacea, goldenseal, marshmallow, buchu
  
Relax 1: barking, restlessness, can't sleep, travel. Contains: hops, california poppy. Use Vibrational Essences too, these can be mixed into the same formula.

Relax 2: barking, restlessness, can't sleep, travel. Contains: lemon balm, lavender, oatstraw .Use vibrational essences too.
  
Respiratory System Support: cough, respiratory problems from allergies, pollutants, viruses. Contains: licorice, marshmallow, mullein, echinacea, chickweed
  
Antioxidant Support: protects the body from free radical damage. Contains: green tea, ginger, thyme, tumeric. Use supplements & diet changes

 Heart & Circulatory Support: use for as a tonic for heart and circulation problems. Contains: hawthorn, nettles, cayenne, garlic
  
Yearly Cleanse: to help cleanse the liver, skin, immune system, parasites, toxicity, aggression, bad breath, bloating, skin problems. Contains: milk thistle, dandelion, cleavers, Oil of Oregano, garlic. Some dogs may need to use this for several months or longer

Spayed Female Support (people use hormone support after surgery, so I believe dogs should too, I've have really good success with these formulas). To support hormones, adrenal glands, and thyroid . Contains: licorice, wild yam, ginseng, oatstraw, nettles, vitex. Use once a week or daily  until old age.

Neutered Male Support (people use hormone support after surgery, so I believe dogs should too, I've have really good success with these formulas) To support hormones, adrenal glands, and thyroid. Contains saw palmetto, licorice, damiana, ginseng. Use once a week or daily until old age.

DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION OF FORMULAS

Formulas should be added directly to your pet's food, and stirred in well. Once a day should be fine for most formulas. If you are using the Relax Formula for helping your dog to sleep at night, you should give the formula is a very small amount of food right at bedtime. 

If your dog will not eat the food with the formula in it, try offering the dosage in a small amount of tuna or sardines, these foods smell strong & will mask the smell of stronger herbs. As a last resort, you can administer the formula using the correct dosage in a plastic syringe (not the glass dropper that comes in my dropper bottles). I find this method traumatizing to the dogs, so it is better to give the formula in food when possible.

Dosages will vary with factors other than weight, so it is best to use less for a day or 2 to test your dog’s reaction to the herbs. For example, one of my dogs only seems to require 2 - 3 drops of a formula to relax him, while my other dog uses 40 drops of the pain formula daily for arthritic pain, they both weigh 25 lbs. 

This is a general guideline, but remember it is best to start with a very small amount and build up from there, and make sure the remedy agrees with your dog:

100 lb. dogs = 20 - 30 drops
50 lb. dogs = 15 - 20 drops
25 lb. dogs = 5 - 15 drops
5 lb. dog = 3 - 5 drops

As I will discuss during the herbalist course, often just a few drops of an herb are needed if the correct herb is chosen.

Most people could benefit from doing a candida cleanse once or twice a year. Imagine how nice it would be to no longer crave sugars or breads, have clear thoughts, more energy and no more skin problems, bowels problems or joint pain.

A good candida cleanse requires an overall approach, using supplements that are anti-fungal, building up your body’s digestive system, cleansing the bowel and lymphatic system, toning the liver and not eating foods which feed the candida.

Acid Alkaline Balance, part 2


To alkalize the body, and get acidity out of the body (and your joints--causing joint pain, gout, arthritic pain)


You should eat 75-80% alkaline foods and a of 20-25% acid forming foods.

 Cut back on, or eliminate:

  • meat
  • dairy 
  • coffee
  • sugar
  • sodas  
  • alcohol

Its really not as terrifying as it sounds. Start with one item on list, such as meat. Stop eating red meat, switch to other meats that appeal to you that are somewhat healthier: such as chicken or fish.

With dairy, you might choose to start with cutting out drinking milk, then cut back on cheese (ouch, that's hard one). Try yogurt, it at least has some probiotics in it that makes it easier to digest. Its ok to start with flavored yogurts if that's only way to do it. Then if you want to take a big leap, try rice milk or coconut milk. (not soy please - its hard to digest, not the best choice).

As cut back on a few things, add more nutritious foods. Add ones that appeal to you, you don't need to be hating what you eat!

Use some supplements:

1. Take a full spectrum digestive enzyme
2. Use a greens product, spirulina or cholorphyll, or Greens+ or something similar to that
3. Use trace minerals in liquid form such as Himalayan Crystal salt sole
4. Instead of regular salt use an alkalizing product such as Himalayan Crystal Salts
5. Detoxify the body: I offer online workshops on this on my forum
6. Use Alfalfa tablets 6 - 9 per day for several months, then cut back to 3 per day. These do an amazing job at getting acidity out of the body.
7. Calcium, magnesium supplement.
8. Instead of ascorbic acid, choose a Vitamin C supplement that alkalizes such as calcium ascorbate.

As your body even gets a hint of feeling cleaner & is becoming less acidic you will find you just naturally begin to let go of foods that were contributing to your health problems & you begin to want healthier foods. If you suddenly switch back to old habits, you can also suddenly experience a recurrence of your health problems, which makes you realize how much the changes in diet are helping you!

A raw food diet is very alkalizing.

It gives rise to an internal environment conducive to disease, as opposed to a pH-balanced environment which allows normal body function necessary for the body to resist disease.When access acids must be neutralized our alkaline reserves are depleted leaving the body in a weakened condition.
When alkaline reserves in the body are exhausted, even more acidity occurs; metabolism becomes inefficient and acid builds up even more in the body tissues, further weakening the body.

Note that a food's acid or alkaline-forming tendency in the body has nothing to do with the actual pH of the food itself. For example, lemons are very acidic, however the end-products they produce after digestion and assimilation are very alkaline so lemons are alkaline-forming in the body. Likewise, meat will test alkaline before digestion but it leaves very acidic residue in the body so, like nearly all animal products, meat is very acid-forming.


How did my body become acidic?


The standard American diet can get over 95% of its calories from acidifying foods. Acidity comes about from eating too many acidic foods, such as animal products (meat, dairy, eggs), salt, cereal, coffee, sodas, and alcohol. Smoking is very acid producing. Physical exercise acidifies the blood with lactic acid. Deep breathing exercises alkalize the blood.

Acidity in the body can cause such problems as:


• Joint pain, aching muscles and lactic acid buildup.
• Low energy and chronic fatigue.
• Slow digestion and elimination.
• Yeast/fungal overgrowth.

•arthritis, gout
 • Cardiovascular weakness, including the constriction of blood vessels and the reduction of oxygen.
• Weight gain, obesity and diabetes.
• Bladder and kidney conditions, including kidney stones.
• Immune system weakness.
• Acceleration of free radical damage, possibly contributing to cancerous mutations.
• Hormone concerns.
• Premature aging.
• Bone demineralization: osteoporosis; weak, brittle bones, fractures

So many people are dealing with health issues like that & have no idea that herbs & correct diet can help to bring their body back into balance & relieve these problems.
